2007 COMPLETED PROJECTS

2007 is Another Record Year for MoP Beneficiaries!

Books, toys and other supplies arrived at Little Bamboo Preschool in Cebu

On January 10, 2008, Ravelyn Espinosa-Pecolados, Admin. and Program Coordinator for Little Bamboo Foundation, Inc., wrote:

"In the port areas of Cebu and its surrounding slum community, the "island" in the streets and, in much worse areas, the dumping sites are the children's sources of imaginative play. And the busy streets are their dangerous playground as they play "patentero" (catch-me-if-you-can) with the speeding trucks and vans trying to sell a stick of cigarette or 1-peso worth of rag.

For these children, whose family's basic concern is putting food on their tables, they are very much hungry for picture books and toys, which ironically are one of the fundamental elements for proper child development.

During the turnover of a box-full of books, toys and other manipulatives from Move On Philippines last December 2007, the children were delighted to have new books and toys, and the teachers were excited as well to learn new strategies anc activities in the lesson-guidebooks. Together with kindhearted people like MoveOnPhil, we hope to contribute to a positive and happy childhood of these less fortunate children, that they may grow into a strong and contributing individuals for our country and the world."

Visit to Mindanao Beneficiaries 2007

MoP Volunteer Doreen Flippin reports on visit to MoP's Mindanao beneficiaries:

"I am happy to report that MOP's book donations to the schools we visited are making a difference. The children are using the textbooks as references. In talking to the school principal and teachers, it seems there is a demand for books about farming, forestry, and related fields. Science laboratory equipment and science books are also highly requested. "

Teaching naughty, hardheaded preschoolers is not at all easy. Their laughter, smiles, giggles and being able to answer my questions or learn values are my rewards, says teacher Elijah Onggo

Teacher In Charge Nhor Laguia of the Datu Ambel High School happily accepted the books as they were turned over by Move On/MinLand, Municipal Government and DepEd representatives.

  • Children are leaders of tomorrow. Children must be equipped with better education to help prepare them for the future.
  • The country's future success depends on an educated and well-informed citizenry. Investing in the education of children is tantamount to ensuring the country's future success.

  • Giving back to the community is a duty of every citizen. Filipino expatriates who have been blessed with more must share their blessings with the less fortunate.

The dividing line between rich and poor in the Philippines today is education. When Filipino children live in poverty, literacy becomes a critical link in a chain that can either tie children to a life of poverty or be used to pull them out of it.

For children living in poverty, every day is filled with challenges and missed opportunities. Move on Philippines believes that education is the best road to a better life for most of these children. With a strong educational foundation, children in even the most impoverished and remote communities have a chance at college, a career, and a ticket out of poverty.

*****

Poor rural communities in the Philippines are often deprived of a quality education. Lack of school facilities and equipment, dilapidated classrooms, poorly prepared teachers, lack of textbooks and good educational resources or references are negative factors that hinder children from  excelling and overcoming the challenges of learning and going to school.
