Bubon
Primary School. The school is four kilometers from the town of
Baybay and about 800 meters away from the national highway to Tacloban
City. The road to the school is unpaved and very rough. Bubon Primary
offers Grades 1 through 3 only with 28 students. Unfortunately, due to a
low number of students enrolled, other teachers were assigned at other
schools leaving only Mrs. Luz Aņoja the only teacher at Bubon teaching
Grades 1-3. As you can imagine, teaching all three grades puts a big
strain and burden on Mrs. Anoja.
Mrs. Emelia Enero, the barangay official who is also in-charge of
education in Barangay Bubon, gave the opening remarks during the
turnover. Then Mrs. Anoja expressed her desire to give the students more
time but it is difficult to give each student attention because she is
teaching three grade levels at the same time. Nonetheless, Mrs. Anoja
was grateful to MOP for the donated books which she can use to improve
her teaching. The books will also instill in the students the desire to
read and study. After the ceremony, photos were taken of students while
reading and perusing the donated resources.
v
Butigan
Primary School - - Butigan Primary School (grades 1 and 2) is about
1km away from Bubon. Mrs. Mary Ann Mantilla is the only teacher at the
school. Each year, the number of grade levels depended on the number of
students enrolled. In 2006, there were three grade levels with only one
teacher.
At the school entrance, a sign reads: Sa bawat paaralan, ang guro at
bata ang bida." This was quite perplexing because of the shortage of
teachers in many schools in the Philippines. During the turnover of
books from Move On Philippines, students expressed their gratitude for
having been chosen as a recipient of much needed library resources. It
was also expressed that more teachers must be placed at Butigan Primary
in order to have a better quality education.
It was gratifying and alarming at the same time to visit this school and
learn more about its needs and problems. The books donated by MOP will
be used to help Mrs. Mantilla in teaching the students. Barangay Captain
Editha Lombog also thanked MOP for the books. The students were happy to
browse the glossy and colored pages of the books.
v
Can-Ipa
Elementary School. On December 17, 2007, the books from Move On
Philippines were delivered to Can-Ipa Elementary School with the help of
volunteers Romulo Alcala and Jessie Nayre. They provided a vehicle that
was used to transport the books to Can-Ipa and other school
beneficiaries in Leyte.
Can-ipa Elementary School about five kilometers from the city of Baybay,
located along the river towards the mountain. There is a serious teacher
shortage at this school. There were six grades in Can-Ipa with only
three teachers teaching Grades 1-6.
The turnover of books from Move On Philippines was made with the
assistance of Mrs. Adelaida Moreno and several Barangay officials. A
barangay official gave a short remarks, followed by the reading of a
message of transmittal from Move On Philippines, and then the signing of
receipt by Gil Guadalquiver. Then the students were allowed to browse
and read the newly donated books. As students were enjoying the bright
and glossy colored pages of the books, we took photographs to serve as
photo documentation of the turnover. Those photos are now in MOP's
gallery to serve as permanent record of the turnover.
v
Gubang
Primary School is located 12 kilometers from Baybay towards Tacloban
City with 24 students in Grades 1 through 4. The teacher-in-charge was
on leave due to a motor vehicle accident. Mr. Renante Diaz, the teacher
substitute, presided the turn-over of books from Move On Philippines.
The Barangay Captain, Mrs. Florentina Valenzona, was also present. Mr.
Diaz stated that the books be will be used by the students. He also
extended his gratitude to MOP and donors.
