Hilaan Elementary School is in a mountainous area 13 kilometers from the
municipality of Bontoc, Southern Leyte. Barangay Hilaan has a population
of 7,000 people who depend on agriculture (coconut and abaca) for
income. Hilaan Elementary has 15 teachers including the principal, Mr.
Marcelo Dator. Teachers travel to the town of Sogod (6-7
kilometers away from Bontoc) to have their reports, exams and other
instructional and visual materials encoded/processed or computerized.
Many Hilaan students have not seen a computer in their life. Due to
glitches observed during testing of the PC and scheduling conflicts,
turnover of the PC to beneficiary school was delayed. Finally, on
Friday, September 16, 2005 at 11:30 AM (Manila Time), a refurbished
computer (Gateway Intel P4 - Multimedia PC) and printer were delivered
to Hilaan Elementary School by Program Administrator, Felix Ocon. The PC
came with educational software programs for Kindergarten and Grades 1-6
including Spelling, Phonics, Math and Science, Encyclopedia Britannica
2005 - Standard Edition, Student Edition, and Standard Reference
Edition. Following is Felix Ocon’s report. You can also view more

RE: Delivery of computer to Hilaan Elementary School (Leyte Province)
“I received the PC without printer for Hilaan Elementary School from
Move On Philippines on July 18, 2005. Unfortunately, I was not able to
deliver the computer right away due to problems observed when I tested
the computer. Further observations showed that the CPU would heat up and
then shut down due to absence of exhaust fan and the malfunctioning of
the fan in the PC regulator. The computer was repaired by a local
technician who charged $2.68 for labor and $6.25 for the cost of the
exhaust fan installed in the computer. Shortly before delivery of the
computer to Hilaan Elementary School, funds from Move On Philippines
were received which were used to purchase two printers - - one for Hilaan
and the other for Guadalupe Elementary.
Finally, a mutually convenient day for delivery of donated educational
tools was arranged (September 16, 2005). Teachers of Hilaan Elementary contributed a small
amount to cover transportation cost (2,000 pesos or $35.71). The money
was used to rent a mini-van and hire a driver. Funds also paid for a “pot-pot” (similar
to a
tricycle). From the municipality of Bontoc, we traveled 12 kilometers to
Hilaan. The roads to Hilaan are unpaved and after crossing two
collapsed bridges, we arrived Barangay Hilaan safe and sound.
Unfortunately, the school is not accessible by bigger vehicles.
Therefore, the boxes of computer and printer were unloaded and carried to the school.
Teachers and students were excited to see the arrival of the
much-awaited computer. They greeted us warmly with "Our computer is
here!" Teachers immediately opened the boxes and minutes later, the
computer and printer set was installed and ready for testing and demo by
teachers and students.
The principal and teachers then invited me to eat lunch with them. The
school had prepared a delicious meal which included fried chicken,
boiled chicken, chicken menudo, grilled pork, assorted drinks and "Biko".
After lunch, I conducted a demonstration on how to use the PC and the educational software programs that were installed for
students use. Hands-on training with teachers and students followed.
Afterwards, I advised the faculty that Move On Philippines has approved Hilaan’s request for library books which are expected to arrive no later
than November 30, 2005. The principal then signed the acknowledgement
receipt of the donated computer and printer from Move On Philippines. The
receipt, letter from principal and students will be sent to the U.S. for
recordkeeping via postal mail.”
