Felix Ocon Reports: Pangasugan Elementary School in Baybay, Leyte
receives books

I am pleased to report that the book shipment
for Pangasugan Elementary School received on October 26, 2005 was
delivered to the school on November 10, 2005. As you know, Pangasugan has also received a computer from Move On Philippines earlier
this year.
The school semestral break prevented me from delivering the resources
sooner. However, it gave me a chance to review the inventory and
the transmittal letter enclosed with the shipment which also included
used clothing, book bags and toys. In preparation for delivery,
toys were wrapped with the help of volunteers from Lakas-Angkan Ministry
at Leyte State University.
A school teacher at Pangasugan Elementary provided a vehicle to
transport the resources. The school is located on top of a hill and
not accessible by vehicles. Therefore, books were unloaded off the road
near the school and grade six male students carried the books up the
steps stopping along the way to catch their breath.
Upon arrival, books were placed on a table in the center of the stage
which was nicely decorated by teachers and students for the short
turnover ceremony. Students were called and the ceremony began
promptly at 8:00AM.
The program started with prayer
led by Grade IV Teacher Mrs. Sarah V. Valencia; followed with
opening remarks by the PTCA President Mrs. Estrellita S. Pumar;
introduction of Move On Philippines Program Administrator and Trustee by
the Grade V Teacher Mr. Primitivo Acedilla, Jr.; reading of the
transmittal letter and a short speech by the Program Administrator;
signing of the transmittal by the school Principal Theresa Rabanos
and Pangasugan Brgy. Captain Marissa Piamonte.
Toys were then distributed to all first grade
students by the Barangay Captain followed by a brief talk by the Captain
thanking Move On Philippines for helping poor school children in
Pangasugan by donating a computer and also books. She stressed the
important role teachers play in molding the future of the students by
helping them achieve a brighter future through good education with the
use of innovative teaching methods and educational tools donated by Move
On Philippines. (The principal will determine who will receive the
pre-owned school uniforms and book bags, mostly the poorest of the
poor.)
Grade six students then performed a choreographed dance as part
of the program. Students were then given an opportunity to browse
the books. The children, who have not seen an encyclopedia
before, were delighted to see colored pictures and shiny white pages. To conclude the ceremony, the principal encouraged teachers to fully
utilize the donated books. The ceremony concluded at 9:30AM, after
which a short reception (juice and crackers) was held in the principal’s
office.Felix L. Ocon
